Before continuing, I must admit I returned this edition, as I wanted another. A classic of its time, a fine edition with illustrated by N.C. Wyeth appeared in 1930. The edtion pictured here carries the simpler but nice illustrations of the original 1903 edition. The story itself I find one of the great Ameircan coming of age novels. My father introduced it to me when I was in high school (1946-1950) and I recently reread it. It can draw tears, Set in the years leading to and of the Civil War, it's about Chad Buford, a wronged and orphaned Kentucky mountain boy, who escapes with his dog and trusty rifle to a hill country village named Kingdom Come, where he is taken in by a local family.The school teacher inspires him to learn. Lost on a school trip, he is found in Lexington by Major Buford, who in time finds Chad is his nephew. As Chad grows up, he is torn by love, and more, by the division of Kentucky by the Civil War. He chooses the Union and is drained by combat. At war's end he decides to go west alone. His surviving love says she will follow. The language can be old fashioned, and in places like that in Huckleberry Finn, but always undertanding.Product details

Having read this book as a teen ager, I had pretty well forgot it it. Thanks to , I found the book and read in again in my upper 80's loving every page. Thanks for asking for my thoughts on this delightful old book. My late mother drew me into so very long ago, because she loved this book more that many others.
I enjoyed it. A classic I had never read before. Book was in better condition then expected and shipping was prompt. I will be taking a motorcycle trip in a few months to explore the area's this story was based on.
This is a very good book I have read several times but it is not coded well (translated to electronic) so quite a few words are impossible to read on my kindle.

I had a worn copy of this book as a child and it lost it in a move. Years went by and I've looked in every used book store I came across for a new copy. None found. I turned to finally and found a vintage copy similar to the one I lost.
The story is of a simpler time but the message is eternal. I enjoyed sharing this story with my child. Thank you
